Relegation Battle - The End

In an unexpected run of evetns, Neil Warnock's Sheff Utd will the final team to be relegated; following Charlton and Watford into the Championships next season. Coming into the weekend, Wigan was on a do or die mission. They needed all three points to stay in the Premiership. Sheff Utd and West Ham just needed a draw to stay up. It seems that the hardest task was Wigan's need tow in over at Bramall Lane.

And true to the unpredicatable nature of this league, Wigan got the win they needed. Wigan having only got 2 out the last 15 points coming into the weekend, took the lead through Paul Scharner. Sheff Utd the equalised before half time courtesy of a John Stead's header. Wigan were always the better team and thier efforts paid off when a Jagielka handled the ball in the box to give Wigan a penalty. Veterean defender David Unsworth stepped up under immencse pressure. He slots in to the keeper's left for a 2-1 lead.

News filtered in from Old Trafford that West Ham had taken the lead with a goal from Carlos Tevez. West Ham had won 3 games in a row and momentum was on thier side. With the knowledge that West Ham is winning, Sheff Utd needs to equalise for their survival. They piled on the pressure in the 2nd half and Danny Webber was played through one on one with the goalkeeper, it seemed that it was coming. Webber dinked the ball above the onrushing Pollitt only to see the ball hit the post and rebounded away from goal. Agonising for the fans. Sheff Utd grew in desperation and resorted to hopeful long balls but to no avail.

The final whistle blew. West Ham did the impossible by doing the double on Man United and Wigan have performed a Houdini-like escape act as Sheff Utd goes down after a season in the top flight.
