Wigan signs Titus Bramble

Wigan Athletic has made the most headline-grabbing transfer so far this summer. Yes it is bigger than the arrival of Nani and Anderson. Wigan has gone to add quality to their squad by signing Titus Bramble on a free transfer. Yes, Titus Bramble.

The 25 year old signs on a 3 year deal after his contract was not renewed at Newcastle.

This is Chris Hutching's first signing of the summer. We don't think he will win over the fans with this acquisition. Yes they will be without De Zeuww and Henchoz next season, but Titus?

hmmm....Titus...Titanic...sinks...Wigan..sinks...championship... This time the crystal might just get it correct. We don't think its a step forward honestly. Titus has been arguably one of the poor performing defenders in the league. Yes he has a few games when he was brilliant but more often than not, his errors has caused Newcastle in the past few seasons. Lets just say he isnt a desirable defender to have based on his performance.

But it wasnt that bad in the beginning for Titus. Before moving to Newcastle, he was playing for Ipswich and was touted by many as one for the future. He was recognised for his pace and strength when he was in Ipswich. His downfall really came when he arrived at Newcastle where lapses of concentration has stained his reputation.

A new club, a new start. For the sake of a man earning his rice bowl through football, we hope he grabs this second chance and start anew. Put in the performances to fulfill his earlier promise.

Manager Chris Hutchings has this to say, "Three or four Premiership clubs wanted him, so for him to chose Wigan was a fantastic coup for us. Once I spoke to him he wanted to come here and he is a great signing for us. He's got great experience. He's played 150 games for Newcastle at the highest level and he's played on the big stage, so he knows what it's all about. We need tried and tested players, but young ones who are hungry and want to improve themselves. Titus Bramble can be a great player."

He continued: "It's up to me to improve him. I want hungry players - young players like Baines and (Ryan) Taylor - so that he can go on and do better for himself. He's got to look to push on and look to England, not just be content to play for Wigan. That's what our aim is. He's not short of confidence. Bobby Robson paid £5million when he was a young boy at Ipswich to take him to Newcastle so he's got good stock. If the likes of Bobby fancy a player like that obviously he's got qualities. It's a fresh challenge for him and he's looking forward to getting started at the club. He's got a point to prove, I want to make him better and hopefully with the players we bring in he will become a better player."

He has had off field problems, especially with his driving. In 2002, Bramble was banned from driving for seven weeks and fined £2,000 for doing 102mph in a BMW. On August 13, 2006 it was reported that Bramble was involved in another car crash in the village of Newton Flotman in Norfolk, while heading for a nightclub in Norwich. His BMW M3 convertible car, carrying five or six people, crashed into a garden wall.

As you can see in the following clip, there are signs of a good player in there somewhere. He totally dominated Drogba.
