Tottenham extremely close to signing Bent

According to BBC Sport, the 23-year-old Darren Bent will become a Spurs player later today after the two clubs struck a compomise deal over the fee.

Charlton have been asking £17million for Bent, and although West Ham United had meet that price, the player himself rejected the club.

While that left the way clear for Spurs, their valuation of the player was some distance short of 17 million pounds. Indeed, Tottenham had earlier had a £13million bid turned down by the Addicks.

But the two clubs reached a compromise agreement on the fee on Wednesday, BBC Sport understands.

It is thought that Bent turned down West Ham in the hope that Spurs or Liverpool would meet Charlton's asking price for him. If Tottenham do complete the deal, they may allow Jermain Defoe to leave White Hart Lane.
