SUNDERLAND

In: Greg Halford (Reading, £2.5m).

Out: Kenny Cunningham (released), Tommy Miller (released).

Gossip: Hearts want Miller. Sunderland boss Roy Keane wants Wigan skipper Leighton Baines, valued at £6m by The Latics.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

In: Gareth Bale (Southampton, £5m).

Gossip: Darren Bent is coming if Spurs are willing to match Charlton's somewhat ambitious asking price of £17m. If Bent arrives, Spurs will apparently listen to offers for Jermain Defoe. Acccording to the Mirror, Bent himself has apparently told Liverpool and Spurs that he will go to the club that gives him the best chance of being an England regular. Mmmm, a tricky one. Meanwhile, Spurs are closing in on France Under-21 defender Younes Kaboul of Auxerre.

WEST HAM UNITED

In: Scott Parker (Newcastle, £7m).

Out:

Gossip: The Hammers are in the race to sign Preston striker David Nugent after missing out on Bent. Eggert's advances have also proved resistible (says the Daily Mail) to Blackburn regarding striker Benni McCarthy - who is also being courted by Chelsea. West Ham have apparently been offered Argentina striker Javier Saviola as a replacement for Carlos Tevez.

WIGAN ATHLETIC

In: Antoine Sibierski (Newcastle, free), Titus Bramble (Newcastle, free), Mario Melchiot (Rennes, free), Andreas Granqvist (Helsingborg, undisclosed).

Out: Matt Jackson (Watford, free), Arjan de Zeeuw (released), David Unsworth (released).

Gossip: Chris Hutchings, warming to this management lark - or at least the shopping side of it - is now willing to splash £5m of Dave Whelan's cash on West Brom midfielder Jason Koumas. Midfielder Josip Skoko (linked with Hajduk Split and Genclerbirligi) has until the end of the month to accept Wigan's offer of a new one-year deal. Wigan will sign Preston keeper Carlo Nash to provide competition for Chris Kirkland.
