Referees' chief Keith Hackett has admitted that the decision by Rob Styles to award Chelsea a penalty against Liverpool on Sunday was wrong, and has confirmed that he will not be in charge of a game next weekend.
In an unprecedented move, Hackett admitted to Sky Sports News that the decision was wrong and has confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against the referee.
Liverpool were leading the match 1-0 until Styles gave a penalty to the away side after Florent Malouda seemed to jump into the back of Steve Finnan. The referee thought differently, judging that Finnan dragged the Chelsea man down.
There was uproar after the match as Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez fumed that the decision was entirely flawed.
Reds skipper Steven Gerrard had this morning rallied for Styles to publicly apologise and surprisingly, in a signal of intent from the Referee’s governing body, that’s exactly what he will do.
However there’ll be further ramifications for Styles who will now not be allowed to referee this weekend
